The memory-picture method: storing vocabulary as an image

Visualised mnemonic · the core of the Mindpop method · 4 min read

Our brain is not a card index. It doesn't store strings of letters — it stores pictures, places, feelings and stories. The memory-picture method uses exactly that: a foreign word is translated into a picture that contains its sound and its meaning at the same time.

How a memory picture works

A memory picture has three ingredients. First, the sound of the foreign word, broken into familiar fragments: to a German ear, “potato” sounds like “Po” (bum) and “Tattoo”. Second, the meaning: Kartoffel. Third, a scene in which both meet — the potato with a bum tattoo.

The scene is deliberately exaggerated, funny or absurd. Not for fun's sake, but because the brain prioritises the unusual. A potato lying politely on a plate is forgotten. A potato with a heart tattoo on its behind is not.

Why it works

Rote repetition uses only one channel: language. A memory picture additionally activates visual processing, and often humour or emotion too. More connections mean more paths along which the word can be found again later.

This is exactly the effect research on the keyword method describes: people who learn words via a sound picture retain them far better than through pure repetition — in studies up to four times as well.

Limits

Memory pictures need a moment of attention: you have to really look at the picture and briefly think the story through. If you just scroll past, nothing is gained. And not every word yields a perfect sound picture right away — then a picture that carries only the meaning helps, or a combination with a small story.

And with Mindpop?

Mindpop consists of exactly such memory pictures: drawn, voiced and with a quiz. You don't have to invent the pictures yourself — you simply swipe through them.

Today Mindpop implements the memory-picture method — further learning methods from this series will follow in the app step by step.
